Factors Affecting Anserine and Carnosine Levels in Skeletal Muscles of Various Animals

چکیده
l. Analytical procedures for anserine, carnosine and related histidine compounds in skeletal muscles are given. 2. The anserineicarnosine ratio in the skeletal muscles of the rat increases with age, cortisone injection and lowered food intake, and in the guinea pig muscle with strenuous exercise. 3. The total anserine plus carnosine in leg muscles of the cat remain constant during long periods of deep anesthesia. 4. Skeletal muscles of man contain carnosine but no anserine. Higher levels of carnosine and low levels of anserine are found in muscles of monkey (Rhesus). 5. Carnosine but no anserine is present in leg muscles of frog.

Quantitative Studies of Carnosine and An- Serine in Mammalian Muscle* Ii. the Distribution of Carnosine and Anserine in Various Muscles of Different Species
For comparative purposes, a knowledge of the distribution of carnosine and anserine in various muscles of an animal, and in the muscles of different members of the species, is of interest. The results of several investigators may be compared with respect to the amount of carnosine found by analysis in various muscles of the cat, but the published data are far from consistent. This is all the mo...
متن کاملCarnosine and Anserine in Mammalian Skeletal Muscle *
Two imidazole derivatives, carnosine and anserine, have been isolated from vertebrate skeletal muscle. Carnosine may be readily obtained from the ox (l), horse (2), pig (3), etc. Anserine, a methyl carnosine, has been isolated from birds, a reptile (4), fish (5), and certain mammals (6). The presence of the two compounds in muscles from the same animal has been adequately demonstrated only once...
متن کاملCarnosine concentration in the muscle of thoroughbred horses and its implications in exercise performance
The exercise performance of thoroughbred racing horses is affected by factors such as body weight, muscle type, and nutrition . Carnosine (β-alanyl histidine), a small and water-soluble dipeptide, in the muscle is a factor that contributes to the exercise performance of animals . This peptide and its analogues anserine (1-methyl-carnosine) are present in the skeletal muscles and nervous tissues...
متن کاملIntracellular Distribution of Carnosine and Anserine in Skeletal Muscle.
The experiments of Bach and Langley (1) with frog muscle suspensions indicated that the carnosine of this tissue was freely diffusible upon dialysis of homogenates. On the other hand, Reddy and Hegsted (2) observed that the “debris” of rat skeletal muscle homogenates contained 43% of the total carnosine. This debris, representing material sedimented at 650 x g, still retained half of its initia...
متن کاملEnzymatic Synthesis of Anserine in Skeletal Muscle by N-Methylation of Carnosines
Anserine biosynthesis may occur in skeletal muscle by two and possibly three pathways: (a) condensation of l-methylhistidine with p-alanine (1, Z), (6) direct N-methylation of carnosine (3, 4), and, possibly, (c) P-alanyl transfer from carnosine to 1-methylhistidine (5). The relative importance of these various routes is unevaluated, although some studies in viva suggest that species difference...
